Garfield Minus Garfield

Hi All,

I don't know why I find this so hysetrically funny. I guess it's because I used to love Garfield as a kid and now that I'm a so-called 'grown up' I find myself wondering what the hell I found so amusing about it. In fact, the entire comics page, including Saturday's full-color strip, I used to love. But now it is the one entity entirely capable of sending me into a crashing funk just by reading it. Looking at it, even. So many of them are so lacking in any humor or wit---as are many of my blog posts, you may be saying to yourself---that I wonder how the cartoonists keep their jobs. Once THE FAR SIDE and CALVIN AND HOBBES left the comics pages, it's been a horrorshow. I mean, THE WIZARD OF ID? BLONDIE? How many times can you watch Dagwood make a giant sandwich? Was it ever funny? THE FAMILY CIRCUS reduces me to tears. I think a random sentence generator has been writing that strip the past ten years.

Anyway, GARFIELD MINUS GARFIELD. I loved it. Even better than the blogger who explained each day's MARMADUKE cartoon. Read the intro, too, to get yourselves set for the hilarity.

All best, Craig.

THe Grousewich

Hi All,

Yeah, I ate one:

Yeah, I rule. I know it is so. I should stop working at the library, stop writing, and go into business making Grousewiches. The tagline could be:

Grouse.
The other, other, other other OTHER white meat.
For morons.

Check out the other sandwich articles. I loves me a good sandwich.

All best, Craig.

WEBSITE

Hi All,

A quick note to those who've contacted me about my website being down. Yes, lamentably, I know this. The screwy provider, Discount Domain Registry, has either lost the check I sent, or cashed it and forgotten to renew my domain name, or are just massive tools. My inquiries have done no good thus far. It should be back up soon.

All best, Craig.

Neighbor

Hi All,

As longtime readers of this blog can vouch for, I would hope, there aren't a lot of people I dislike. Che sera, sera, live and let live and all that lark.

My neighbor, though, I do not particularly care for. I don't know that I dislike him, specifically, but there are enough things that he does that at least, for my personality type, promote the idea of dislike.

JOB

Hi All,

I've been back at my old, pre-Iowan job about a month now. Librarian. A struggling writer making ends meet as a librarian---how cliche is that? Or maybe, more accurately: a librarian trying to reassert himself as a writer. Yes, that's probably the truth of it. I've always said that when someone asks "What do you do?" you should answer with what earns you the roof over your head. For a few years I could say, "I write." The past month and going forward a few more at very least, it's "I'm a librarian."
