Refresh Post ...

To refresh the post below, which I copied from my wordprocessing program and it came through all screwy. Should be better now. All best, Craig.

Food Network II

Hi All,

Sorry it's been some time since I updated. My excuse? Well, I don’t have one. I've been working hard, as they say, 'drumming up work.' By this I mean sitting on a street corner somewhere in Calgary with a 'scrivener for hire' sign. So far I’ve rewritten a menu for a Chinese restaurant and ghost-written an eighth grade book report.

I said I'd do another Food Network post. I love the Food Network. As a reformed glutton and connoisseur of food porn, it really is my favorite channel. It's funny: you'd think, watching as much as I do, I might actually try some of these recipes out. You'd think. Lately I've been a big fan of the '2 burrito + salade' dinner; here's the preparation instructions:

-take two (2) Price Chopper brand frozen burritos. Microwave 2 minutes. Open ends of bag to prevent explosion.
-take one (1) head of Andy Boy romaine lettuce. Cut. Dress with dressing of your choice.
-garnish with one (1) can Diet Orange Crush or Coke Zero.

Serves: one lonely uninventive man.

Anyway, my lack of culinary ambition should be no reflection upon the generally fine stable of shows on the Food Network.

So! Onwards!

CBC Podcast

Hi All,

If you want to listen to it, here it is. So go listen to it, why not?

http://podcast.cbc.ca/mp3/sundayedition_20080407_5253.mp3

I can't vouch for anything as to how it sounds or what I may or may not say. Same way I can't read some reviews, I can't listen to myself on the radio. But I know it starts with a doctor who is pro-steroids. So that was interesting to listen to. I thought he'd be a crackpot, a quack, but really, he sounds pretty sane. Saner than me, probably.

All best, Craig.

Juste être un homme

Hi All,

That's the name of THE FIGHTER in France. Just published today. Got a call from my editor, Francis Geffard, friend to writers everywhere, informing me of this. If my shaky French skills are correct, the translation is something along the lines of JUST TO BE A MAN or TO BE A MAN or JUST A MAN. Which is from teh Chester Himes quote in the front of the book. Francis actually did some extensive editing of the manuscript---partially because the French audience is a little different in their tastes and tolerances than North American audiences, partially because I should've made some changes myself---so French readers will be getting a different reading experience than others. The same US and UK cover. It's my brother staring back at me. Fifty years later if I see this cover, if I'm senile by then which seems likely, I'll still blubber, "Graham! My brother!" and then the orderlies will feed me more prune mush to make me smile. My thanks to Francis and everyone at Albin Michel; really, they're a great publishing house, nice supportive people, and it's always a pleasure working with them. And to Anne, a fabulous, fabulous translator.

All best, Craig

Sunday Edition

Hi All,

For any interested, I did an interview today with Michael Enright of CBC's Sunday Edition. If no other noteworthy news happens between now and next Sunday, the 6th, I've been told it can be heard from 9:00-10:00 am. If not, I've been bumped. So, if you're not sick of hearing about the Esquire article, or haven't read it, or want to hear me fillibustering on the radio, well, CBC Sunday Edition is the place to tune your shortwave set this weekened. Possibly.

A few other things that I should've mentioned earlier. I underwent an agent change. These past months have been a bit odd, which is not terribly strange considering I, myself, am an odd human being. I am now represented by Vanessa Matthews at the Anne McDermid Agency. She's very cool, and I was introduced to her through my new film agent, Jerry Kalajian. I bear no ill will at all towards my previous agent; she was great, she did many wonderful things. I think we had a pretty good relationship, though I'm not sure she'd agree---I would like to hope so. Unfortunately I am at a crossroads of sorts, which is the same crossroads many writers find themselves at after their initial contract has been fulfilled. It's not a fantastic place to be, to a certain extent, but for a lot of us, it is a place you must pass through. You don't always pass through in the same company you set out with. This is an unfortunate, though perhaps unavoidable, part of the job.

What else? Am I writing, still? You bet your ass. I'm jobless, right now, so I'd better be. But I'm taking my time, really working hard on editing and tightening what I'm working on---which has always been one of my achilles heels. I'm about 4-5 months away from finishing my current project. Barring unforeseen circumstances. Let's hope there are none of those.

Look for a new installment of my FOOD NETWORK HOSTS ratings. I've been watching lots of food network and I have a few bones to pick! A few brickbats! But some kind words, too.

All best, Craig.
